Dear all...THIS IS FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS...
One question and one answer...
Qn. My son is 17 years old. He does not have any specific interest or choice of course or profession. So, what is wrong in me selecting the course or profession for him?
Ans: Nothing wrong. Let us assume that course is engineering, (the way our parents prefer) which requires intelligence to study and finish the course with flying colours. If the boy is highly intelligent, skilled, if he starts liking the subjects and the profession, then all good only.
But if he does not like the course or profession, then he might do well or just average and change over to the profession (e.g civil services) of his choice by doing studies related to it later or by doing an MBA. Some continue in the same profession, but enter into an area which they like to an extent and do well or average and live their life off concentrating on family life, social life etc.
If he is average or low in intelligence but gets interest, puts in hard work and remains committed, then he might finish the course, get a good/average job and live his life. If he does not get adequate interest, does not put in required hard-work and commitment, then he may not complete the course or complete the course but may not be job-ready to get a placement. In this case also the money invested for a purpose may not result in that purpose. He might end up taking up some other profession as he may not get a well-paid job.
The interest of course and profession keeps changing during adolescence depending on their fantasies.
It is better first to know the 'Job Description' in the profession of our choice, check out if we have the aptitude and intelligence required to gain knowledge, skills and personality attributes related to it, if we like or ready to live the type of life style or living style which the profession demands.
Intelligence, interest and aptitude measurement may also help to an extent.
Peacefully yours...rams...Psychologist!!
