Hai all...here is the Part V of copy-paste from my ppt on "Life Skills-Understanding Adolescence!"....read all the previous parts on this wall or in my blog befor reading this...these researches have been done mostly at US...so take only the meat...mostly it is common across all cultures, societies and religions...
Some do not accept their physique if they had a glamorized concept of what they wanted to look like. So, they change the physique or their concept.
“adult-approved sex role” is not difficult for boys (i.e how adolescent boys should behave with men and women). They are encouraged in this direction since child hood.
Girl children are ‘permitted’ and encouraged to socialize equally with both sexes. After they attain age, accepting and playing an “adult approved feminine role” is a major task requiring many years of adjustment.
“new relationships with opposite or same sex” also becomes difficult due to this!
“emotional independence from parents and other adults” seem to be easy for “independence conscious adolescent”.
But ‘emotional independence’ is not the same as ‘independence of behaviour’
They want to be independent, but need the security that emotional and economic dependence on parents or other adults gives.
Especially true for those whose status in peer group is insecure.
Extracurricular activities help. Parents and teachers help. But adult fostered values clash with peer values. Their social life depends upon peer acceptance. Peer behaviours are considered ‘socially irresponsible’ by adults.
Not prepared at home, school and college for duties and responsibilities of married life.
Rapid changes in internal growth, brain, organs, physical appearance, maturity levels, perceptions, sexual differences, muscles, strength, broad shoulders, weight gain, taller,
Generally height gain is faster than weight gain initially. Later muscles build and compensate.
Body-cathexis – some parts of the body do not grow – comparisons with others and culturally approved standards – social reactions - the biggest cause of unfavourable self-concept, low self-esteem – reason for many failures!
Menstration-physical discomforts, cramps, weight gain, headaches, back-aches, swollen ankles, giddiness, less Hb, breast tenderness, emotional changes like mood swings, depression, restlessness, tendency to cry without reasons.
High physical and mental stress - Missing food, less food, late food, junk food, no nutritious food, less water, less sleep, more talking, RF stress, more emotional relationships, social networks, mobile, laptops, head phones, anxiety-we ourselves are not good role models.
Perceiving menstruation as ‘a curse’ and comparing with boys that they don’t experience develops unfavourable attitudes and feel ‘martyrs’
Acne-concerns both-boys feel bad as they can not use cosmetics to cover up.
Obesity affects minds-so, starve, control urges, stressed, social taboo, affects sexual life, cover with clothing
Spend more time for ‘appearance’-think ‘important for leadership selection’…‘if attractive then more favourable treatment’
ok guys and gals...here i stop...will continue in the next later...
peacefully yours...rams...health(y) psychologist...!!!
