Good
reply Rams. I read the Ethiopa email too. I remember you highlighted
in the earlier mail about the absurdity of praying to apease nonexisting
gods. I feel that a rationalist or an atheist is happier than a theist
mainly because he/she need not worry about something on which he/she
does not have control. Keep following laws of the nation and do good to
people rather than praying for them and doing nothing else.
As you said in this mail, as long as the person believes in
something which brings happiness and does not affect others, it's fine.

This is an inspiring piece of write up. Congratulations!
I wonder how many of the Indian Psychologists think of taking seriously Indian perspectives on Psychology, that can be taught to students and others, which has everything that is needed to: "realise their own selves about life, living, their powers so that they come out of the shell like warriors and make this nation the real superpower!" (as you have concluded) .

Thanks for the insightful sharing. You have indeed raised a vital point on which I have questioned myself ever since I gained some rationality :)
As I see it, God is a force - no shape, no size, no voice, no face. It is to be felt, perceived and subsequently understood. In this regard, it perhaps is a fabrication of the human mind.. something like a hallucination.
Of course, we dare not call it so.. as we are well aware, anything that is not pronounced culturally normal is abnormal..
Since, belief is God falls with the majority, it is hardly abnormal, hence not a hallucination.
I do confess that I am allergic to godmen of all communities, shapes and sizes. At the same time Sir, I agree with your viewpoint of dissociating their beliefs and dialogues from their personal life. We deserve no right to condemn a baba for his sexual truancy when we gave up our rationality on blindly following them.
What these godmen do, is make a Market of Faith, Faith is bought and sold here... the reins i.e. control of our life is shifted to the higher powers (not heard/not seen). The reason we suffer, is because of our previous life karma and other such (out of own control) doings... hence we must endure.. and rest our trust that 'God' indeed will make it better.
Of course, all this is easier for a upper middle class, well educated, no emotional mess person like me.. and for those who have suffered trauma.. life is more challenging.
However, the godmen only worsen the state of the affected... After they are traumatized, the godmen even take away the last little rope of faith in 'self' and replace it with an external faith in 'other'.. the internal locus of control is shifted to the external...
Thus, worsening the state of the affected and refuelling their tankers of mass preachings and mass donations...
Utter Rubbish.
An excellent theatrical display on this same topic is Paresh Rawal play titled 'Krishna vs. Kanhaiya' a must watch for all..
I don't disagree in the power of Faith Healing.. but only as long as the reins of control are within the individual.. the moment they are to be given to others, the Psychologist in me violently shudders.
With pain,
