dear friends...
i would like to share my experience here...
about four years back when i (44) attended M Sc contact classes at PSG College of arts and science, coimbatore, i met K.Balasundaram (55) and Mr Santhanakrishnan (65) as my classmates there...
Bala sir is Chief Manager of State Bank of India at a far off place and at this age used to travel about 1100 kms every week to attend the classes!!! San sir is ex faculty of IIT Chennai who has worked at gulf and was the CEO of his own company which manufactured and marketed Intelligent Security Systems to many countries for good 24 years...even now he is the mentor there...
Psychology brought us together...and we three studied together ("The Three Musketeers!' or the 'Young Oldies!')...during the gap of two minutes or so, san sir used to literally run to the toilet climbing up and down three flours and run for about 200 mtres away from the building and enter the class in time!!!...that was his interest and dedication as a student!...though our class strength was above 50, only about 25 of us qualified for exams and only about 7 of us cleared all subjects in the first attempt and we three were there with bala sir as the ultimate topper teaching and motivating us!
Though me and bala sir could register for PhD with the blessings of Dr VG sir, san sir could not as he was short of 1% and more than him we all were upset and feeling bad that he is not in our boat. I remember, Dr VG sir was against this system of 55% and was working towards changing that. San sir did not want to wait for change of policy. With all his determination and drive he wrote two subjects again to improve but could not. He did not leave there. He decided to start the sailing afresh again and did an MA in Yoga at the same university to score more marks and join us for the PhD.
Yesterday he just called up and said during his recent visit to US, one of the US universities recognised his academic qualifications and experience and has admitted him as a PhD scholar!!!
Why i am narrating this here is:-
(1) To tell the youngsters in psychology about the interest, dedication and determination of an engineer CEO at the age of 68 to study psychology as a good student in a classroom! (in fact we came to know later that whilst he was doing MSc with us he was also doing a Post Graduate Diploma with Anna University, Chenni in addition to being the CEO!!!). So, age does not matter and it is the attitude in life that matters. Though Life Span Psychology says that in late sixties or early seventies the brain cells die at a higher rate, here we see that his brain cells have started growing, glowing and flourishing at 68!...when our Indian citizens are talking about death, diseases, neglect, god, god men and digging their grave at this age, here is a young man who is digging his brain to carve a new of himself!
(2) Determination of Dr VG sir, to get the policy changed so that it benefits a larger spectrum of the society! Hats off to you sir! You have set the course for the other universities also to follow this so that all the citizens of India get benefited and they too start digging their brains and learning life sciences to live in harmony.
In my opinion, in line with that of VG sir, courses on Humanities and Life Sciences should be easily accessible and freely made available to as much of Indian population as possible by increasing the advertisements, relaxing the pass percentages and other regulations.
By teaching one man we teach only one. By teaching a girl we teach a community!...so more awareness, encouragement and concessions should be offered to girl students by the universities.
One of my relative who is a drop out of a corporation school (tamil medium), 7th std, has now started her studies after 40(!!) years of gap, completed BSc psychology in english medium in first class and feels liberated, rejuvenated, a changed person and on top of the world that she too can achieve like others in her life! Before this, as i mentioned earlier, she was like a mouse inside 'kitchens and toilets' only!...she is none other than my own blood sister!!!!
I wish the top academicians of universities who are members of this esteemed group take the necessary initiatives and spread the wings of the universities to accommodate more birds inside the nest of Humanities and Life Sciences!
