hai friends....thank you to all those who contacted me on phone and conveyed in person regarding your feelings on this series of mails......i have received many questions... ..answers will come separately for all shortly....
day before yesterday i met a senior officer who is a 'rising sun' with lots of scope for career progression. .....surprisingl y he said he is not interested in the present profession and want to leave to learn vedhas and do purohit job....he mentioned that he wants to do acting in movies too....you can imagine the turmoil that will be going on at home between him and his wife......
you might feel that he has got a problem in the mind and needs treatment... .but it is not so...he only needs career counselling. ......in indian conditions most of the men and women after 40 feel like this...spcially those whose career graph is on the drooping side....
let us see the science of this....
all human beings are borne with some % age genetic endowment of skills....after birth of the child these skills in addition to those in which the child has the apptitude to learn could be identified.. ..every human being as per maslow has the inner urge to self actualise... .means achieving the ultimatum by using the best of their skills....which means we need to identify the skills, competency level in each skill, aptitude of the child to absorb in each skill, most prominent skill with max aptitude.... .then focus on growing the potential of the child in those prominent and promising skills....so that the child self actualises.. ..in this process there is no stress on the child....as he achieves success and rewarded the interest also will grow along with potential... .and will happily self actualise... .
but under indian scenario this does not happen....we concentrate on marks, professions which have got high scope for job and higher salaries.... and send the children for those courses and professions. ...initially they will be happy in their profession as they are happy with the rewards...i. e salaries, good standard of living, security, status, self esteem etc.....i.e they achieve the first four steps of maslows need theory....now upto this level they were deriving happiness out of the outcomes of the job and not the job itself as it is not matched with the skills.....as every one has most of the skills (at different competency levels in each skill) required to live and work they with their hard work, loyalty etc etc can reach till self esteem.....at 40 when you reach the 4th level you feel disgusted because the dormant skills keep jumping inside in the unconcious mind....as you have not pursued those skill related professions. .... as they are not money fetching.... also unable to self actualise as your competency in the skill related to your present career is not glass full....
this is dangerous as those who do not grow in the maslows need ladder will fall down by one step if they get stagnated at any level....when they come down they will display vigorous symptoms of baheviour related to that step compared to their previous dwelling time in the same step.....this period of change over is a turbulent un balanced period during which the person can go wonkey if he is not successful of dwelling at that level properly and immediately. ...if he reaches stability fast....realises his inner skills....concentra tes on that then he can self actualise... .otherwise will remain in the same level.....
so, the crucks of the matter is identification of skills, identification of various professions with the skills required for each....matching our skills with the professions. ...growing the skills and potentials.. ....this is what we are supposed to do to channelise our sixth sense to gain the maximum power and reap the benefits too!...this is what career counsellors are supposed to do!
as the mail has grown long i will stop here....we will see what scientists have to say on this....their theories.... should we go by the INTEREST route ( e.g one might say "my son is interested in becoming a pilot") or SKILL route etc tomorrow.... .
psychology has nearly a hundred branches and each branch has several spciality areas......career counselling is one such.....what you imagine about career counselling is a small percentage.. ..it has much more than what you think.....more later....
